A house designed around an existing stand of ipê trees the clients refused to remove. The plan works around and between the trees, which shade the garden and produce a constantly changing pattern of light through the day.
The plan is loosely L-shaped, with the longer arm containing the living and sleeping spaces, and the shorter arm the guest rooms and studio. A double-height living space at the bend of the L frames a view of the largest ipê tree.
The structure is a poured concrete frame; the facades are a combination of brick masonry and large glazed openings. The pool and terrace are embedded in the garden at a level just below the house so that the trees appear to rise from the water.
The ipê trees flower yellow in August, for roughly three weeks, and briefly make the house look entirely different from how it reads for the rest of the year.
